案外の僕、アメリカに帰国していった – An Unexpected Me Returns Home

Given the subject matter of the last several months worth of writing, it should be no surprise that the end of my time in Japan was in sight.  One part that I have kept a secret to all but some friends and sister was that I would be stopping home before beginning my next adventure.  What this meant was that I would be able to have a little bit of fun with my parents.  You see, I had last been home a year and a half prior, and took the opportunity to surprise my siblings.  It was only right that I turn the tables.  After my dear sister collected me and my rather dense luggage, we returned to the little hamlet of Zeeland.  The plan was for her to distract them in the foyer while I go around back and just walk up the stairs.  This plan went over pretty well.  I did a horrendous job of filming it, but there are times when you can see their faces.

Not looking nearly as cool as I though I would.  About 100kg of luggage…

I hope you don’t have issues with motion sickness…

My parents digested their shock as I went to work on an immense blueberry pie, as only my mother (and perhaps Brad Lampe) can make.  My brother had confined himself to some faraway lands, so it was just the four of us to share in the weekend.  They listened to me talk a bit, but eventually they needed to head to bed, while my jet leg had me awake all through the night.  During my short stay of less than 5 days, I planned to relax a bit, see some friends and also the family.  Of course, there were several menu items that I needed to get my hands on as well.  I’m writing now the day before I take off again to my next adventure, and I can say that I was able to get it all in there.

The royal welcome

One of the ongoing themes from throughout my stay home was blueberries.  In addition to the piece of blueberry pie that I devoured, there was also a blueberry cobbler made from the incredible 9 pounds of berries that I myself picked.  I hadn’t been to the fields in ages, so I was pleased to have the chance to measure the improvement over my childhood days.  So it was with a burning passion that I reaped from the bushes to accrue an amount that matched the take of everyone else’s combined.  Good times.

Another of the highlights was being able to meet a few friends and members of my family at a couple of my favorite establishments to engage in some quality catching up.  The fraternity folks have always been good to me and that a few were willing to make themselves available and also insist on treating me to Denny’s was much appreciated.  So tomorrow, this quick stint will draw to a close and I shall bid adieu to little ol’ Zeeland.  It is always great to come back though and remember why home is always home.
