小学校のオリジナル短編 – Elementary School Original Shorts

To finish off the school year with something fun and different, I challenged the students to act in some short movies.  The task was well received by the elementary kids last year, so I wanted to do it again.  I generally petition them for some keywords and then write a script around it, as was the case with Kaminishi’s, but Shionoe took care of it all themselves.  It is great to see the students getting into the project, and it certainly makes it a lot of fun for me.  All in all, this is something exciting and unique to do with the students and I really hope to see it continue.

Because there are only five students in the Kaminishi 5th/6th grade class, it was pretty easy to get things looking a bit more polished.  We were able to take a bit of time to make some costumes and practice the lines.  The filming then took place over the course of two classes, but I was fortunate that their teacher worked to make sure they memorized it.  I wasn’t expecting that at all, but when I came returned for that second week, I was amazed that they could rattle the whole thing off.  As a result, their delivery sounded much more natural and I was able to focus on coaching their gestures and delivery.  After I got everything stitched together and subtitled, the whole school gathered for the premier.  All seemed very impressed with the result.

As for the Shionoe 6th graders’ film, it was all shot within a day and as such is definitely a bit rough around the edges.  From the time that they sent me a script for translation, to us actually filming it, nearly a month had passed.  I wasn’t even sure if the thing was going to happen at all, but when I arrived for that last day of class they were all still keen on the project.  In the end the films saving grace was their teacher’s incredible performance as the Horse Prince.  I had about two days to get it all completed before their graduation, but it was a success.  They all laughed throughout and seemed pleased to have had the chance.  And here it be…
