I wrote a couple weeks ago about some of my new toys, one of them being a squat rack and weights. I had been hesitant about setting it up in my front room since the floor is decrepit and sagging. Because of this, it has been sitting unused as anything but a storage space since the day I arrived here. There would really be no better place than this to put it though. One other deterrent was the ongoing debate between the city and the landlord to decide whose responsibility it was to fix the floor. Despite some inspectors who have come to check it out, I’ve sat idly by with nothing happening for far too long and figured it was time to get things going.
The 20th of March was a national holiday and a day off of work. I took this opportunity to get out and buy whatever materials I needed and devoted myself to cleaning the room. I wish I had a before picture, but basically the room had no functioning space and required some tricky navigation and tiptoeing to get around in. I shuffled around some of the big objects and organized everything into the shelves and closets. This alone took about two hours. Then, so as to avoid dropping a plate through the floor, I went to a home center (as close to Lowe’s as you can get in Japan) where I bought some big sheets of wood. After learning a few new words, I borrowed a circular saw from some neighbor friends and cut them to size.
Once I swept up a lot of sawdust, the last big thing on the list was to reassemble the equipment. No instructions came with it, but the process was intuitive enough. All that was left was to cozy it up a bit. I added a fan for the summer heat, a mirror with which to enjoy the fruits of my labor, and some speakers to make my gym time a bit more bearable.
The finished product.
All in all it was a really productive day and I was genuinely satisfied with how it turned out. At the time of writing, I’ve already gotten in there on a regular basis. I’m through with the sore legs stage of squatting, and I’ve been using the overhead bar for chin ups and core exercises most nights. I may be getting a bench from my school soon which would be great. I will stick with this as long as the will power holds up, but between selecting healthier cuisines, resuming my swimming, and this at home training, I am hoping to be at my best come the spring holidays.
