I don’t usually have much going on at Shionoe Elementary beyond my normal classes, but occasionally they ask me to read a book to the students. This school does a really good job of having ‘guest’ teachers read books, and getting students to read during recess. I recorded the first time I was asked to do this because the book was easy and the kids were reacting well to me. The second time I was asked however was pretty bad; the book that was selected by the librarian was worthless for reading to kids. It kept repeating the same stupid phrases, and in the end there plot was really dull and since it was all from a narrator’s perspective, I had no way to liven it with voice acting. It was painful.
This time around though, I was asked to read “The Three Robbers” which for whatever reason they had an English copy of. I was to read a passage in English, then let her follow up with the Japanese translation in her matching book. At the end of it all the kids were content, so it was good. You too are rewarded with a rather uninteresting 8 minute video. I think for this next school year, I will try to bring my ‘talents’ to my other elementary schools, since I think it would help to develop a good report with the teachers.
