Every year the schools put on a Halloween party for the students, which I of course play an integral role in. The few class periods leading into the events are spent reviewing relevant vocab such as bat, Frankenstein and ghost. As well as set phrases like, ”Happy Halloween” and ”What are you?/I’m a ______”. These lessons culminate in mask making and then eventually the party.
The elementary schools and the kindergarten all have Halloween Activities, but the schools have varying degrees of interest, so not all the events are equally amusing.
My first event was for the kindergarten, which is also a nursery. My partner and lesson planner was unavailable this week due to some recent surgery, so I was tasked with entertaining the kids on my own. Not so hard to make young kids smile, but all eyes were certainly on me and I didn’t was to crash and burn. The lesson was reviewing the vocab by pulling things out of a bag. Then, I assigned gestures to the events and then called out the words as commands. After that I tried to burn a few more minutes before calling it and yielding to the pictures. This turned out well, as getting a picture with each class took quite a bit of time.

As I said for the elementary schools, each one does it differently. This year the award for lamest goes to Yasuhara Elementary, who rather than opting for an all school activity, embraced a 1 class at a time policy. They still got all their candy, but I feel like half of the fun is getting together with your peers to enjoy each other’s costumes. Meanwhile, I had to conjure up the holiday spirit too many times for it to be anywhere nearly genuine. Maybe next year will be done better. On the opposite end of the spectrum was the party with Shionoe Elementary, which puts the most into the event. Not only do they draw in the whole school at once, but the also go so far as to create haunted houses in some of the classrooms and costumes to go with their masks. So, the kids are all excited about the party, because a lot of attention has been paid to the preparations. Also, with the whole school participating, there are a lot more teachers to pass out candy. The principal dressing as Mrs. Claus, was a bit strange.
Finally, at Kaminishi Elementary we continued the trend of having a more significant event scheduled. Not only did the students make their rounds to the faculty and staff, but I also got about a half hour with them in the gym to enjoy some festive activities and games. During this party time, we did three activities. The first was one where we had to bring the zombies to life. While laying motionless on the floor, if they are made to laugh, they lose. Then, that student helps me in my quest to stir the dead. There was one particularly stalwart student that I destroyed by recounting the tsunami-esq symptoms of my food poisoning. The other activities included a relay race on Jack O’Lantern islands and also mummifying some students. The relay race was similar to any you would see in a camp setting, where the back platform needs to be rotated to the front in order for the team to advance. Lastly, with mummification, the teams had 5 minutes to wrap a team member in toilet paper as effectively as possible. I had brought some toilet paper that had ‘One Piece’ characters all over it. The staff and students were all very concerned about wasting it, since it was such nice paper. I thought this was crazy, and let it happen anyway. This went well and wrapped up this year’s Halloween Party for all of us.
From the perspective of a teacher, these events are great. They get the kids excited, and also serve as a tremendous use of time that merit cookie cutter lessons with minimal planning. Looking forward to next year for sure.
I have a lot of legs and ass, but I decided that being this pirate was a much better option than wearing the white swan costume again, especially to school.
