Rice balls serve as a use for extra rice, and also as a cheap fiiling part of any meal on the go. So, for a field trip, all the students were going to make their own rice ball lunches. I took this to mean that they were going to be made for each other, and everyone would get to enjoy different varietys. Wrong. I am now at the school, with a massive platter of impressive and well crafted rice balls that left the other teachers wondering how I would be toting them along for the hike. Well done. Anyway, as I said, they did look good so at least I got points for that….
So first, you make a lot of rice. This step should be fairly logical.
Then you need to pack rice around whatever you are filling your balls with. Mayo, fish, and spices are all popular options. I decided to keep it interesting and put fried chicken inside.
The next staple is seaweed paper. This is called nori. Usually you just put a boring rectangle around the rice wad, but I decied to up the game by carving the symbols for my school out of it.
And lastly the finished product! They were certainly a hit, and all 1o of them were eaten. Sure, three by me, but that’s neither here nor there…
