Well as of today I have officially extended my contract to remain here another 12 months from August.
My reasons for staying number many, and all contribute to the fact that I am not ready to return stateside. Despite the pros of returning in 6 months, the benefit of remaining is vastly dominant.
First and foremost, I am simply having too much fun here. The people that I share company with and the friends I’ve been making are fantastic. This job is a grown up form of college; I still have responsibility, but now I have money and live in Japan. I’m spending my free time with friends and and still get an excitement from life much akin to college. It’s a very fortunate position to be in at this point in my life. I’m just not ready to depart this way of life yet, there is too much good happening here.
I also have a bit of a travel agenda that remains. I want to see the world and no job is more conducive to those desires then the one I have now. Plenty of vacation days and ease of escape, paired with Japan’s proximity to other interesting places make good on those desires.
One significant reason is also my desire to learn a bit more Japanese. I’ve certainly picked up a bit of the language since arriving here, but mostly in the category of reading. I expect the the one skill that would aid me in a future of international business would be speaking, so I want to maximize the time where learning it would be easiest. I’m working on hunting down a few language partners and have already made progress towards those ends. I’m really excited about getting better and expect it to really pick up from here.
All in all, I love what I’m doing here and all that it affords me, so to leave now would most certainly leave me with a sense of regret later on in life. Not only that, but coming home to either no job, or one that pays worse for something far less fun doesn’t have a strong appeal to me either either. You all now have an extra 12 months with which to get to Japan and visit me.
See you all someday…
